The Tanning Truth

thY6YI34EXA lot of people believe indoor tanning is safe. The truth is, tanning beds injure thousands of people each year badly enough to go to a hospital, and that’s just the beginning. People who indoor tan damage their skin, causing wrinkles,uveal-melanoma-2-2col warts, rashes, and dark spots. They may even get skin infections, cataracts in their eyes, and skin cancer, including deadly melanoma. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies tanning beds and tanning lamps into its highest cancer risk category, carcinogenic to humans, the same category as other hazardous substances such as plutonium and certain types of radium.

There is a common misconception that a tan acts as the body’s natural protection against sunburn. A tan is the skin’s reaction to exposure to UV rays, the skin acts in self-defense by producing more melanin, a pigment that darkens the skin. Over time, this damage will lead to prematurely aged skin and, in some cases, skin cancer. Two types of UV radiation that penetrate the skin are UVB and UVA rays. UVB rays penetrate the top layers of skin and are most responsible for sunburns. UVA rays penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin. Both UVB and UVA rays damage the skin and can lead to melanoma (the deadliest type of skin cancer), basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

881f9c46fb0c11a364a26ccdc2e3ed4bYou may have heard that indoor tanning is the safer way to tan because you can control your level of exposure to UV rays, this is not true. Tanning salons use lamps that emit both UVA and UVB radiation. Indoor tanning is designed to give you high levels of UV radiation in a short time.

Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for young people 15-29 years old. Melanoma is the leading cause of cancer death in women 25-30 years old and the second leading cause of cancer death in women 30-35 years old.

Many people desire a tan to make them more attractive, however tanning is what leads to premature sunbed-adaging. One of the chronic effects resulting from repeated exposure to UV radiation is premature aging of the skin, which encompasses a number of clinical signs that reflect structural changes in the dermis. These clinical signs include dryness, wrinkles, sagging, loss of elasticity, and skin discoloration. These signs are the result of degenerative changes in elastin and collagen.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and unlike almost all other kinds of cancer, the rates are climbing. This is definitely not a trend you want to follow. Avoiding indoor tanning and protecting yourself from the sun when outdoors are the best ways to reduce your chance of getting skin cancer and premature aging.

Here is a brief story on an actual Melanoma patient:

Brittany Lietz Cicala of Chesapeake Beach, Md., began tanning indoors at age 17. She stopped at age 20 when she was diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The former Miss Maryland says she used tanning beds at least four times a week, and sometimes every day.

“Growing up, until I started using tanning beds, my parents were very strict about me wearing sunscreen,” says Cicala. Although she also tanned in the summer sun during her 3 years of tanning bed use, Cicala estimates that 90 percent of her UV exposure was in tanning beds during this period.

In the 4 years since she was diagnosed with melanoma, Cicala’s surgeries have left her with about 25 scars. Cicala gets a head-to-toe skin exam every 3 months, which usually results in removal of a suspicious growth.

It is never too late to begin protecting your skin! Make an appointment today for your skin exam and learn more about ways to protect yourself and your family.

The Best Protection

Sunscreen has come a long way. We now know we need protection from UVA and Infrared radiation as sunscreen blog 3well as UVB. Todays sunscreens are true anti-aging, anti-cancer powerhouses. But, how do you know which products are the best?

Read the label! SPF measures your ability to stay in the sun without burning. It is a good measure of protection against sunburn and cancer-causing UVB rays. Look for sunscreen that contains Zinc and has an SPF of 30 or higher in order to give you full protection from the sun. The words “broad spectrum” on a sunscreen label means it is protecting you against both UVA and UVB.

UVA rays penetrate more deeply than UVB and cause a longer lasting tan, or leathery look of the skin. These rays are big contributors to brown spots, broken blood vessels, and skin thinning as well as skin cancer.sunscreen blog TDR

Infrared (IR) penetrate deeper into the skin than UVA and UVB and now sunscreen blog 4there is a superscreen that features SOL-IR Advanced Antioxidant Complex to prevent the damage from chronic exposure. Total Defense and Repair is a superscreen by SkinMedica that offers protection against Infrared damage as well as UVA and UVB rays.

UVB rays are dangerous because they:

  • Allow sunburn
  • Lead to skin cancer
  • Cause premature aging

UVA rays are dangerous because they:

  • Are the most intense UV sun ray and are intense all day long and all year long
  • Do not feel warm, like UVB rays, so you don’t realize you are getting sun damage
  • Come through window glass
  • Are not blocked by all sunscreens
  • Lead to skin cancer and premature aging

Sunscreen should be worn everyday on ALL sun exposed areas of skin to prevent:

  • skin cancer
  • wrinkles
  • age spots
  • purple blotches (actinic purpura) and skin tears that happen on the arms
  • thin skin
  • the red/brown discoloration that occurs on the sides of your neck over the years (poikiloderma)

Are you overwhelmed by all the choices?

At our Clear Medspa we carry new and innovative formulations that everyone can enjoy using! There are still creams and lotions, but now you can find sunscreen in a liquid, solid stick, and powder. Application has never been so easy. Whether you have the most sensitive skin to the oiliest of skin, there are formulas for your skin type. During the entire month of May all sunscreens are 20% off!

Skin Cancer Awareness

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. These cancerous growths develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells triggers genetic defects that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. DNA damage is most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds.

The majority of melanomas are black or brown, but they can also be skin-colored, pink, red, purple, blue or white. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), skin cancerespecially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. Melanoma kills an estimated 10,130 people in the US annually.

People who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by 75 percent. Worldwide, there are more skin cancer cases due to indoor tanning than there are lung cancer cases due to smoking.

If melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable, but if it is not, the cancer can advance and spread to other parts of the body, where it becomes hard to treat and can be fatal. While it is not the most common of the skin cancers, it causes the most deaths.

Most skin cancers can be found early with skin exams. Regular exams by your doctor and checking your own skin frequently can help find cancers early, when they are easier to treat.melanoma 4

Regular skin exams are especially important for people who are at higher risk of skin cancer, such as people with reduced immunity, people who have had skin cancer before, and people with a strong family history of skin cancer.

It’s important to check your own skin, preferably once a month. A skin self-exam is best done in a well-lit room in front of a full-length mirror. You can use a hand-held mirror to look at areas that are hard to see. A spouse or family member may be able to help you with these exams, especially for those hard-to-see areas like your back or scalp.melanoma blog 2

The first time you examine your skin, spend time carefully going over the entire surface. Learn the pattern of moles, blemishes, freckles, and other marks on your skin so that you’ll notice any changes next time.

The good news is that you can do a lot to protect yourself and your family from skin cancer, or catch it early so that it can be treated effectively. Seek shade, especially during midday hours; 10 am to 4 pm. Umbrellas, trees, or other shelters can provide relief from the sun. Wear sun protection gear like a hat with a wide brim and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes. Wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants or a long skirt for additional protection when possible. Wear sunscreen daily on all sun exposed areas, even if you do not plan on being outside for a prolonged period of time. Choosing the right sunscreen is important to ensure the right protection. Your sunscreen should contain Zinc with an SPF of 30 or higher. Remember to reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating, or toweling off. Whether you have the most sensitive skin or the oiliest of skin, there are formulas for your skin type. Stop by Haley Dermatology Clear MedSpa today to find the right sunscreen for you and your family! All sunscreens are 20% off the entire month of May!

Fight Against Aging

As skin ages its qualities change. With aged skin wrinkles appear, elasticity is loss, texture changes and becomes drier. Pores may also begin to increase in size. There is also a loss of volume in the face with redistribution of fat. Here are a few products that should be apart of everyone’s daily skin regimen to fight against aging:

Sunscreen. It may sound silly that sunscreen will help protect your skin from aging, but it is the most important protection for your skin. Excessive sun exposure can speed-up the biological clock causing wrinkles, brown spots, and irregular pigmentation to develop at an earlier age. Increased sun exposure can also contribute to the development of skin cancer. There are several sunscreens out there to choose from, but choosing the right one makes a big difference! We recommend sunscreen containing Zinc with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreen should be applied every morning and throughout the day as needed.

Correct Your Double Chin

kybella blog

Submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin”, is a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition. It can impact a broad range of adults, including both men and women, and can be influenced by several factors such as aging, genetics and weight gain, and is often resistant to diet and exercise alone. Kybella is a new injection that can treat submental fullness. KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin”. The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat and retreatment is not expected. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. Schedule an appointment today for your Kybella treatment.
