Botox Cosmetic
What is Botox® Cosmetic?
It is a natural, purified protein that is used for the treatment of facial wrinkles.
How does it work?
Botox® Cosmetic is injected in small amounts into frown lines (between the brow), the forehead, crows’ feet and around the mouth. It relaxes facial muscles which thereby causes the overlying wrinkles to soften and often disappear.
I’m only thirty-five years old and do not have that many wrinkles.
Why should I consider getting Botox® Cosmetic treatments?
Patients that receive regular treatments are able to not only reduce the lines they already have but also prevent additional ones from forming in the future, thus slowing the natural wrinkling of the skin that comes with age.
How safe is it?
Used correctly and administered by a dermatologist, Botox® Cosmetic treatments have very few risks. Your physician injects only a very tiny amount of the medication into different spots in the skin yet gives patients fantastic results. The most common side effect is a small amount of bruising at the injection site.
How long has Botox been used to treat patients?
Botox has been used to treat patients for more than 20 years. It was initially used by ophthalmologists to control chronic eye spasms and twitching. Only later did it become apparent that Botox could be used to treat wrinkles.
More than a million patients have been treated since it was approved by the FDA in 2002 for the treatment of frown lines between the brows. However, dermatologists have treated patients for cosmetic purposes with Botox since the mid 1980’s and still continue to use it on an “off-label” basis for other cosmetic areas.
Dermatologists also use Botox to treat severe sweating under the arms and/or palms, a condition known as hyperhidrosis. In addition, many neurologists use it to help patients with severe migraine headaches.
